1994 program/film that FSOL did music for

I'm being driven demented trying to locate a film or TV show in the UK probably around 1994 which FSOL contributed music to - possibly specially for it. I think it might've been on Channel 4.

I seem to recall 'Vertical Pig' being used.

I am imagining/mis-remembering this?

Help put me out of my misery!

It is possible that kind of program exists, but improbable that new/exclusive FSOL music was used for it. At least some of us would've heard about it. I also remeber Egypt and some other ISDN track were used in a Discovery documentary about ancient Egypt. But that documentary had nothing special... Except the FSOL music :)

W.S.H., perhaps? Vertical Pig is used over the end credits.

Ah, WSH was the one I was thinking of. '94 and Channel 4 also ties in with their Equinox appearance but I know it's not that:

As much as I love their music, Gaz always comes across as a massive wanker in interviews. I'm not surprised Brian doesn't bother saying anything.

The impression I get from recent interviews is Gaz to some extent feels the same way about his younger self. He seems to have lightened up considerably of late.

They were going to release the soundtrack to Weird Shit Happens at some point weren't they? Wasn't it going to appear in the Podroom or something, or did I dream that?

While lighten up it absolutely true, I wouldn't say he ever appeared as a 'massive wanker' :)
- I mean, sure, his younger self is a bit rough and sounds a bit too much - but don't judge by presentation, look at the essence of the talk - he always has a point, and I think he still agrees with his younger self, in general - some thing inevitably change with age, but as of late, his words are spot-on every fucking time, and his responses are so comprehensive (this includes our little chats too), they don't leave much place for follow up questions and/or debate (well, unless you're some kind of 'journalist' or brainless...).

Yeah, I always like everything he said in those old interviews. It's rare you get someone speaking so passionately about their art in such a way.

Thanks for the replies, folks. Weird Night is exactly what I was thinking about.

:D

I've heard a few people saying this.. maybe he's a bit conscious about how good they are but besides that, there's really nothing that bothers me that much ;)

I think they were pretty well known for their misanthropy, especially during the Dead Cities era.. I can't really blame them. Who knows, maybe the interviewer was a complete wanker himself :D

why is he a wanker? is it a crime to think and talk? is it a crime to keep active your mind? is it a crime to believe in your music? i believe that gaz is a nice guy, a man who still keeps thinkin'..and thats rare nowdays tho

He's very self-congratulatory, haughty, pompous, talks up his own music and outlook endlessly and is frequently extremely dismissive of other musicians and prone to making sweeping criticisms of whole scenes and styles. In that recent Lifeforms article that was posted here he states "DJs had an illness. To be honest it seemed like everyone had an illness except us, especially within Dance music." I come, come on. There were plenty of other electronic artists from the same generation who were making equally remarkable music, and yet even now he's happy to ignore the likes of Aphex Twin, Orbital, Autechre etc. and pretty much state "We were the only ones getting it right." I for one find people who pat themselves on the back constantly, criticise everyone else and refuse to acknowledge the achievements of their peers to be, well... wankers.

By contrast, Brian almost never says anything in interviews but whenever he has it is totally down to Earth. Take this article in the Guardian about Stakker Humanoid: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/n ... acid-house
"Not everything you do sounds good. You can record a lot of things and you never quite know what's really going to explode. I have to say, when I did Humanoid I remember sitting back and going, 'Wow - fucking hell!' There was definitely a feeling that this was a good one. It's very rare that tracks do that."
These are the words of a smart, grounded guy. Gaz's endless rambling soliloquies framing his music against whichever grandiose social/technological/philosphical canvas that has appeared in mind's eye at a given moment make him sound like a jumped-up art student perpetually convinced he's the only smart guy in the room.

Truth is, I don't think Gaz ever really saw Orbital, Aphex etc. as contemporaries, which might explain it.

ok jack, i see your point..but I think Gaz was always into lotsa collabs with other musicians, done lots of remixes for other musicians and its important that he releases music from other musicians on his label.. all these things proves that he loves other musicians and their work...also in his mixes you can find music from orbital, aphex twin, autechre etc.
