I think by 'beyond' he meant chronologically - i.e. he's not heard anything else from their 'questionable' era.

The Dream is my favorite, what a fantastic album from start to finish. Especially the limited edition (which I don't have :( ) that's got the bonus track.

I've listened to all the albums from the 90s, plus Cydonia and Metallic Spheres! When I said the only Orb album I'd heard beyond Cydonia, I just meant the only one released after it :) I would say Orbus Terrarum is my favourite, then Metallic Spheres and U.F.Orb. I guess you're saying Metallic Spheres doesn't count because it's a collaboration? It's pretty kick ass though.

Just listened to:
Slipknot - .5: The Gray Chapter

I personally don't count it as it's really really terrible

I'd check out Okie Dokie if you haven't already - cracking album, though mainly because it's about 90% a Fehlmann solo thing !

Okie Dokie will be coming soon. Ish. Probably a few months away, to be honest. It's Daleth of Elphame next, then Bicycles, then Battersea Shield... and then I think it's Okie Dokie :geek:

Why don't you like Metallic Spheres? Are you not a prog rock fan? I consider it vaguely reminiscent of Porcupine Tree's great Voyage 34.

epitome when i made the false assumption that you only heard two orb albums i said metallic spheres doesn't "count" because imo it doesn't deliver the "classic orb" sound. much in the way the lee perry albums don't
like i said - i love all things orb so it's not about that - i was just on the wrong path of thought there with what you were saying

this one isn't orb at all.....but an awesome reggae dub mix by alex:
The Orb - I'll Be Black

That possibly might be it (though I do like Neu, is that prog rock - or krautrock ?), just seems a little too meandering and the electronic side of the mix totally at odds with the guitar section (always seemed like that bit was an afterthought)

Neu! fall into the krautrock category, not anywhere as noodly as what is generally considered prog!

I like some prog, but Metallic Spheres bores the life out of me. I liked it for a couple of listens but then couldn't face putting it on again.

haha....i haven't heard a ton if neu! myself but i kinda feel the opposite

that it's too noodly and less structured than traditional prog

metallic spheres - if i remember correctly i think it IS an afterthought

like originally it was just jam session that was recorded and then later on alex started talking to gilmour about turning it into a commercial release?

???
I think the general definition of 'noodly' is long, meandering improvised solos etc., which doesn't really fit Neu! at all. Loosely structured, maybe, but the playing is quite tight and minimal.

I think it's generally the long solos and improvised playing that tends to put people off prog and similar stuff - obviously The Orb have a fair number of fans who are more into the electronica/IDM/ambient end of things who probably won't appreciate it at all (see also: Amorphous Androgynous)

yeah idk to be fair i just use my own definitions lol

when i think of music universally labeled "prog" i think of complex rhythms and lots of composed structure that goes along with it. surely there are bouts of improv but they still fit tightly into the framework and once that section is over it's back to the notation

noodly i def think of long and improvised....and def "loose" as well

back to metallic spheres for sure the orb's appeal and heart of the music is all electronica
a bunch of gilmour can put a lot of the diehards to sleep etc.

somewhat on topic......new "floyd" comes soon :)

Given that Orbital have broken up (again) I'm mostly going to be listening to them today...
