Prometheus

Post by kornbean »

So is anyone planning on seeing Ridley Scott's Prometheus? I've been waiting for this for a long time. It'll be interesting to see Ridley return to the Alien saga and sci-fi as well.

It'll be the 8th for me. I don't think I'll choose to watch it in 3D though.

Before reading my views on the film bear in mind my bar for good films is pretty darn high - It takes a hell of a lot for me to be impressed by a film (e.g. no single piece of CGI has enthralled me since possibly Terminator 2 - but that was only because I was 13 when I watched it). Plus I watched it in 2D as like 4% of the country I was born (though now superficially corrected) with amblyopia (lazy eye) so 3D films just don't work with my eyesight:

In short - It was OK, but I can’t use any more hyperbole than that. I’d say that to compare it to any modern day ‘disappointment’ (though that’s probably too harsh a word, more ‘a sequel of late that I didn’t really have any feelings either way other than I witnessed the film for a specific length of time and came back with no kind of emotional response) was Terminator Resurrection (was that what it was called, the one with mumbly Christian Bale in it anyway – that’s how little impact it had)

It was really just a series of interconnected events with essentially white noise as dialogue in-between. Everyone seems to cite Michael Fassbender as the best character in the whole thing, but that’s only because everyone else is generic sci-fi blandington. You’ve got the hard guy, the nerdy guy, the love interest couple, the unable-to-act-to-save-her-life-scientist woman (never seen her before, all I know is she’s Scottish and can’t act), the icy female protagonist type, and the ‘definitely not at all trying to clone Ripley’s character’ woman. So yeah, Mister FastBendington was the only one that was different, but he was no Ian Holm or Lance Henriksen – In fact the nearest performance and style he seemed to go for was Jude Law’s Gigolo Joe character on AI. They couldn’t even get him to not blink unlike what Kubrick + Spielberg managed to get every character to do in the aforementioned (in my opinion) aforementioned underrated Osment vehicle (BTW you know the twee ending that everyone always assumed Spielberg tacked on – apparently ol’ Kubrick always had that ending in mind from the start)

It looked nice and moved along at a decent place, but was very average. The change in mood and tone was very choppy, chunks of joining scenes seemed missing; people would be fighting/dying, then the next scene would have those still alive not mentioning what's just happened or caring.

Plus after I watched it I found out it was co-written by the guy who wrote lost. Looking back that fact makes a lot of sense to the sieve that is the plot holes present in the film.

[Warning: plenty of spoilers here]

I think my biggest problem with the movie was, like you said Pete, the lack of concern from most of the characters. In particular when Shaw beat the Scottish chick and some other guy over the head when they attempted to put her in stasis after David discovered that she was pregnant with that alien life form. Apparently the Scottish chick and the guy just didn't give a damn after she managed to escape to that operating table. Also, with Millburn and Fifield, the two guys who got left behind in the Engineer structure, you'd think that in any rational futuristic scientific expedition, someone aboard the Prometheus would be assigned to monitor them, that their video feeds would be recorded, and that their suits would be capable of transmitting their locations. Furthermore, no one seemed to care about discovering what had become of Fifield after those mercenaries managed to subdue his mutated body or about making damn sure that the cargo hold was secure before escorting Weyland down there. In spite of all of this, I still think that the movie was fairly good. I just wish that it could have done more to exploit the unsettling mystery of their situation as was done in Alien where every character was completely enthralled by the circumstances.
