Notes: The album was originally planned for release as per FSOL101 promo and the US mispressed version, which was mastered at Abbey Road Studios. However, it was changed for the final version at the last minute. The US label, Cleopatra, "accidentally" released 2,500 copies of the original tracklist, although many were called back later on. Versions of "The Mello Hippo Disco Show", "Elysian Feels" and "The Galaxial Pharmaceutical" differ immensly over the releases, whilst "Goodbye Sky (Reprise)", "Go Tell It To The Trees Egghead", "Divinity" and "Guru Song" have more minor differences. The artwork differs slightly over the two final releases, with the tracklisting featuring on the back of the US release but not the UK one, the US release having four extra pages of photographs, and a few more minor differences. The accidental release features exclusive (minimal) artwork.

In the US, Cleopatra Records decided to release the album as The Future Sound Of London, for commercial reasons. However, the album was and is an Amorphous Androgynous release. Initial UK pressings featured a sticker stating "The Future Sound of London presents Amorphous Androgynous: The Isness".

The limited edition UK version of the album (FSOLCD101) comes in a Burgopak (double-sliding) case, and is limited to 10,000 copies. The standard edition comes in a normal jewel case featuring the same artwork booklet.

The standard US release features a spelling mistake on the back cover, misnaming "Her Tongue Is Like A Jellyfish" as "Her Tongue Is Loke A Jellyfish".

In 2004, the album was released as a limited edition 2CD set The Isness & The Otherness. CD2, "The Otherness", featured some tracks and mixes from the mispressed version of the album, "Chawawah" from the vinyl version of the album, as well as remixes of "The Mello Hippo Disco Show", "Divinity" and "The Lovers", and some new and unreleased tracks. This set came in a Burgopak case, limited to 4,000 copies. The Otherness was then released as a single disc set in the US on the Psychobaby label.

The "Galaxial Pharmaceutical" album is one of at least twenty versions of the album recorded. This tracklist was announced on futuresoundoflondon.com in September 2001.

The "Meadows" promo was spotted in 2001, but nothing has been seen or heard since.

The working title of the track "The Isness" was "Low Tide On The Sea Of Flesh".

The versions of "The Mello Hippo Disco Show", "Elysian Feels" and "Go Tell It To The Trees Egghead" on The Isness Sampler are the Abbey Road masters from the mispressed version, whilst the version of "Divinity" is the "Album Edit" from the Divinity promo single.

An EP was penned for release a couple of years before "The Isness", however it was scrapped and the tracks - including early versions of "Elysian Feels", "The Isness", "The Galaxial Pharmaceutical" and "Theram" - made it onto The Isness and Alice In Ultraland in different forms.

Joining Brian and Gaz for The Isness was a team of various famous and unknown musicians and friends of the group, to give the band sound the album has. These include: Alex Balanescu, Clio Gould, Levine Andrade, Sue Monks, Philip Bainbridge, Christene Charly, Gary Lucas, Stinky Rowe, Baluji Shrivastav, Mikey Rowe, Randy Hope, Taylor Gospel Choir, Chris Margary, Fayaz Virgi, Kevin Robinson, The Cabbage Orchestra, The Major, Sam Pickins, Albert Ross Junoir, Sir Daniel Pemberton, Bertie, Sara Gepp, The Vaudeville Stage and Big Screen FX Singers, Catrin Jones, Ben Pitt, Jeniffer Underhill, Vulu Krakovic, Charles Cross, Herb Moon, Merlin Sturt, Wayne Urqhart, Future Sonic Orchestra Limited, Linda Lewis, Joss, Dominic Glover, Anjali Sage, Mike MC Enjoy, Phil Eastop, Kate St. John, Morven Bryce, Helen Binney, Jane Fenton, Christene Jackson, Joanna Archard, Herbie Flowers, Sarah Tilley, Mark Eades, GloriaGee, Rechenda Elmhurst, John-Llewelyn Evans, Christine Settle, Jacqueline Goddard, Adrian Osmond, Jon English, Thelma Owen, Alexa Hamilton, Tim Weller, Tom Swift, Dan Swift, and Big Freddy Teddy as well as long-time collaborators Max Richter, Philip Pin, Riz Maslen and Richie Thomas. Brian and Gaz are credited as Stone Freshwaters and The One Man Band Of Cosmos respectively.

The Isness is very different from everything the band had release prior to it, with several psychedelic/prog-rock inspired songs and instrumentals, featuring guitars, flutes, sitars and vocals in the mix. The album was recorded between 1996 and 2002, and is only a selection from a large number of recordings made over that time. Gaz sings many songs, featuring bizarre and surreal lyrics, backed by a range of musical styles that sounds at once like many classic bands yet like nobody else. The artwork is a collection of photographs by American artist Jim Cherry and friend Paula Flack, edited by the band as Amorphic Arts, and helped by Gaz' girlfriend Dianne Harris. There is an album foreward written by legendary psychedelic singer Donovan.
