Subtitled "A collection of psychedelic relics from The Amorphous Androgynous 1967-2007", The Peppermint Tree began life as From the Archives-style collection of Amorphous material, but the band realised the strength of much of the unfinished material, and completed these tracks to form a new album. "The Peppermint Tree", "Marylebone Road" and "Drifter" were long-awaited tracks announced around the time of The Isness. The album continues on from Alice in Ultraland, removing almost all trace of electronica and modern classical music, with newly recorded FSOL material taking up this direction. The album is the most rock-sounding of the first three Amorphous records, although does contain linking sections between all tracks for the first time. The digital release features a bonus track.
