07:21 Underground Resistance - Back Row to Nirvhana - (Underground Resistance, 1991)
- Underground Resistance is probably the most militantly political outcropping of modern urban American techno. Combining a grubby, four-track aesthetic, an almost strictly DIY business philosophy, and an oppositional, militaristic ethos similar to Public Enemy without the drama (or the familiarity; the members refuse to be photographed without bandanas obscuring their identities), UR have redirected their portion of the Detroit techno legacy to social activist ends, trading mainstream popularity and financial success for independence and self-determination.

This is actually remix of Requiem named (A Floating Leaf Always Reaches The Sea Dub Mix) from this single: http://www.discogs.com/Killing-Joke-Change/master/17575
The remix was made by Thrash (from The Orb) and Greg Hunter.

This is actually live version of 'O.O.B.E.' taken from their "Live '93" album. However at the beginning you can hear also 'Plateau' taken from the same album. It stops after couple of seconds.

Thanks Loose, I do my best and these mixes are exhausting and pleasureful to dig through at the same time :)

If only someone can recognize the one below, IT'S DRIVING ME INSANE EVERY DAY 24/7...
They have this one in ALL Kiss mixes, well... maybe not all of them but 6 out of 8...

Maybe Alan can help now that he's on board :D

FSOL - Kiss 100 FM Transmission 5 [radio mix] (18.11.1993)
- bootleg / first official release 15.11.2008, currently unavailable

Image

The third Thursday of November 1993 brings us the fifth Kiss mix.
This is one weird mix, mixing perfectly the newest music coming out in 1993 and some very weird old pieces from the 70s and the early 80s, just look the release years... extraordinary diverse meltdown from artists all over the world.

So, Kiss Mix 5, deconstructed and explained - read away! (and don't forget to Listen...)
(scroll to the end of the post to see just the tracklist)

03:45 Source - Source EP A2 (aka Squeeze) - (R & S Records, 1992)
- One of the great tracks to be heard on R&S Records in 1992 was the deeply mysterious "Neuromancer" track. The name "SOURCE" had not yet appeared on any R&S release list, yet the man behind the Source, immensely gifted Swede Robert Leiner, had been studio manager and engineer of the labels’ own recording facility for some time.

20:50 KMFDM - We Must Awaken [Snippet] - (Wax Trax! Records, 1992)
- Just a short spoken sample is used, but I'm glad KMFDM are involved in the Kiss mixes :)
- Pioneers in the crossover between Techno/Dance/EBM electronics and heavy metal guitar samples. Born in Germany but then relocated to the USA. Rumour has it that KMFDM stands for "Kill Mother Fuckin' Depeche Mode", "Keep Madonna From Doing Music" or "Kylie Minogue Fans Don't Masturbate", but in fact it is an acronym for the nonsensical and grammatically incorrect German phrase "Kein Mehrheit Für Die Mitleid" (actually kind of a grammatical play upon words juggling with definite articles). This term can only be loosely translated into English as "No Majority For Pity" but then loses much of its irony. Thus the grammatically correct phrase "Kein Mitleid Für die Mehrheit" ("No Pity For The Majority") has emerged and is now in common use, even officially.
- ( )

Kiss 100 FM Transmission 5 (Part 3) (30:22)

00:00 Stephan Micus - The Song Of Danijar - (WIND Records, 1978)
- Jesus F***ing Christ, where were they finding all these stuff... the level of diversity is... insane...
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Stephan-Micus-Be ... se/1715756 )
- "You will awake now" samples float around...

01:43 ????? - ????? - great entrancing track... I'd love to know the source...

05:56 ????? - ?????

06:57 King Crimson - The Sheltering Sky - (EG / Polydor, 1981)
- I'm probably the only person here who thinks King Crimson are better than Pink Floyd and largely overlooked... although, listening to Floyd lately, I'd say these two bands are very different and shouldn't even be compared.

13:32 Sven Väth - Drifting Like Whales in The Darkness - (Eye Q Records, 1992)
- Sven Väth is Germany's most enduring and accomplished DJ/producer. Since he began DJ'ing at the famous Dorian Gray club at the age of 18, Sven has created ripples through the world of electronic music in many ways: As co-founder of the trendsetting labels Eye Q Records, Harthouse and Cocoon Recordings; as owner of the clubs OMEN and Cocoon Club; and perhaps most importantly, as the godfather of Germany's trance and techno scene since its inception in the early 90s. Sven, like no other person in electronic dance music, has the ability to expose underground sounds to the mass population. His 14+ hour sets are the stuff of legend, and he will be DJ'ing parties until he his unable to physically operate a turntable - and even then he will be doing something innovative to propel electronic music into the new era. The fourth and last Thursday of November 1993 brings us the sixth and last Kiss mix.
Lots of FSOL tracks and snippets here, like they were practicing mixing, sampling, re-arrangeing and collaging their own tracks and getting ready for the ISDN transmissions and the unique 3D Headspace tour :)

So, Kiss Mix 6, deconstructed and explained - read away! (and don't forget to Listen...)
(scroll to the end of the post to see just the tracklist)

No, you're not the only one. KC is the best rock band EVER.

Yes it does :)
Actually, I'm slowly pushing through '94 but also still finding tracks of the Kiss transmissions, (they really exhausted me...)
also, still have 2 more releases to round up '93, the BBC Essential Mix 1 and the Darshana mix. (both in December '93)

- add to this that I'm finally trying to make a mix for the next Terminal Radio,
- and it's been Crazy busy few weeks at work, and the next 2 won't be any better...

- also started reading This Is Your Brain On Music: The Science of a Human Obsession a science book written by the McGill University neuroscientist Daniel J. Levitin - it seems really interesting :)

So yeah, busy times, but my brain has been experiencing pleasure boosts since I started the chronology and also started listening various tracks from different eras every day - so yeah, good times...

Pande-reviews: 1993.7 (BBC Essential Mix 1, Darshana)

Post by Pandemonium »

FSOL - BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix 1 [radio mix] (04.12.1993)
- bootleg / first official release 15.11.2008, currently unavailable

Image

Only 9 days after the last Kiss 100 FM Transmission, FSOL were invited to participate in the Essential mix series hosted by the Legendary Pete Tong - I mean, is there anywhere a more Legendary radio DJ? The only answer that comes to mind is John Peel, they can share the first place - and no other man has came even close...

There was an initial tracklist released by FSOL for this one, which at the time credited lots of environmental samples that found their way into Lifeforms. The tracklist also credited tracks that aren't actually on the mix, or were misspelled, so we can only assume that FSOL got some of the tracklist wrong (it wouldn't be a first time). The usual mistakes of wrong track right album/single or label instead of artist are also present.

Otherwise, I won't go here with links (Discogs & YouTube) as I did with the Kiss mixes, mostly because we've all had this tracklist for a long time, and because 2/3 of the tracks are tracks that are present in the Kiss mixes. The mixing level is still going up, and now we can definitely say that at this point FSOL were ready for the unique ISDN tour.

I was a little worn out from the Kiss mixes and generally skipped this mix (because I thought we had most of the tracklist) - but on the 2nd sweep I found out so much more...

Highlights and new-finds are:
Yanka Rupkina & Stoyan Velichkov - Mari Maro (circa 1972) - awesome sample from Balkan (Bulgarian to be more precise) folklore music.
Fedor Tau - Steppe Kargiraa (1990)
The Orb - Blue Room (1992) - yeah, and no one noticed the snippets...
House Hallucinates - Prisoners of Ecstasy [slowed down 60%+] (1992)
- I think the beat is there, but there are some other mixed in melodies from some other track.
Transglobal Underground - El Heddud (1993)
Axis – 13th Floor - (Elevate, 1993)
- this is a weird one - can't find the original release - so some misspelling maybe...?
- I tried Axis (label) by Jeff Mills - no luck
- the track name and label suggest misspells from the next UVX track
- the Elevate label was also a sublabel of Passion Music, contained early FSOL on dozens compilations...
UVX - Elevator (13 Floor Spectrum) [Snippet] (1992)
Reload - 1642 Try 621 (1993)
Third Ear Band - The Cauldron (EMI) - this one is definitely NOT present in the mix.
Dick Walter - Circles (KPM Music)
- It could be some of the Circles tracks, because there are like 6 of them on the album.
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Dick-Walter-Foun ... se/1762898 )

FSOL - BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix 1 - enjoy this two hour journey:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

David Sylvian & Robert Fripp - Darshan [single remixes] (06.12.1993)
Virgin - SYLCD1 / SYLLP1 // Toshiba EMI Ltd - VJCP-20013

Now just go ahead and read the red letters a few rows above one more time. David Sylvian & Robert Fripp - it rarely gets better than this. Both great experimental artists with multiple projects, Sylvian is mostly known as a founder of Japan (and later for some very cool experimental solo albums) and Fripp is known as the founder of the legendary progressive rock band King Crimson, and in my humble opinion - the best experimental guitarist that ever lived - and he's still alive and pushing guitar soundscapes into the unknown.

The original song is from the album "The First Day" (1993, Virgin), a great-great album, the original track is very good too. The remix is actually credited as Re-constructed By FSOL, and B&G even have additional writing credits. The FSOL reconstruction is a brilliant ambient trip, using unconventional guitars and percussions. I don't know what else to say about this track, it's not far away from Cascade and it would fit very good somewhere on Lifeforms.

02 - Darshana / Remix [Re-constructed By] – The Future Sound of London /
Engineer – Yage / Written-By – Dougans*, Sylvian, Fripp*, Cobain*, Gunn* [10:13]

Dedicated to the memory of Edie Fripp (Robert's mother) and the birth of Ameera-Daya Sylvian (David's daughter).

Darshana, Re-constructed By The Future Sound of London
