Yeah, Force Majeure is one of my favourites too, along with Poland, Pergamon (the piano intro is Schmoelling's finest moment) and probably Rubycon (and it's live equivalent on the Bootleg Box, Albert Hall 1975).

With this venture I have visions of you sat in a room with a stack of CDs, a coffee machine and the intention to not sleep until you've got through them all! I gave Ambient Monkeys a listen earlier and it isn't as good as it could be. Some of the field recordings have a really narrow distant stereo field and you can spot Jerome's tracks a mile off by the thumping beats. I may try next Epsilon in Malaysian Pale for a deeper more mellotronic version, and its Plumber's World equivalent Aqua.

I dunno about Pergamon, the first side is nice but much of it is done better on Tangram I think. Whenever I think of the second side I can only think of this one long solo that takes up the second half of the track. Definitely not one of my favourites. Mind you, my list of TD favourites is quite a strange one.
Just finished Underwater Sunlight. Lovely. And now onto Canyon Dreams, a sadly overlooked work in their catalogue which contains some of my favourite of their '80s work.

One day I will give Edgar's solo stuff a proper listen. But not today.

Canyon Dreams I have but it kind of passed me by. In fact I'm not sure where my copy is. I seem to recall it being a little on the new agey side, but that's probably preferable to the wall of biscuit tin drums and midi sounds that were to come just after.

Edgar's solo career mirrors the TD output in that it gets on shaky ground after the Virgin deal ended. It's generally more experimental than TD's output, and then later descends into a remixes of older stuff with a bunch of outtakes for good measure. Everything up to Pinnacles is up there with the best of TD in my opinion, even if the majority of it is less accessible.

Ohh, get a room you two :D :D :D

It's definitely new agey, but it's actually really well written, and refreshing to hear '80s TD without the incessant drum machine. I only bought it originally because of the sample on Eggshell, but was very pleasantly surprised.

Now onto Livemiles.

Pande - who's that then? First Symphony of London?

no no keep it going i'm loving the whole conversation as well as ross's venture!

solo edgar is quite good imo

dell.... phish is kind of like a more electrified rock version of the dead. dead sit closer to the folk side of the spectrum in terms of composition etc.
like the dead though all of the phish magic is to be had with the gigs. their albums get little praise though i personally like them fine.

their first album JUNTA is a total masterpiece and the writing and recording is unlike anything you'll ever hear

beyond that it's about grabbing a live gig and reliving the experience.
there are a number of shows i could bring up but there is also something to be said about the compilation live albums they put together. "A Live One" and "Slip, Stitch and Pass" are really good tastes of some of the finer moments they can achieve live. so you don't get that front to back "feel like i'm almost there" vibe you would from hearing a real gig....but they give you an instant injection of the "meat" of their popularity

and then there are special gigs.....ones with themes.....one that is a narration of a story that is composed of a number of tunes. they've covered a full album by the beatles, who, velvet underground, rolling stones, little feat. there are full sets of ambient instrumental jamming.

all said i can expand on recs if you need more
i would say that unless any of those "special" gigs tickle your fancy and you need more specifics, to start with either A Live One or Slip Stitch and Pass

would love to hear that any of you give them a try :)

I'll have a look into giving Phish a bit of a listen, I'm always a sucker for bands that have a monumental discography... Hawkwind? Check. Tangerine Dream? Check. Grateful Dead? Check. Ozric Testicles/Nodens Ictus? Check. The Infinite Worlds of Dougans and Cobain? Check.

I might actually get back to listening to that AA/Syd Arthur jobby one day soon, only listened to it once so far in tandem with the original album it was based upon. Not to mention the artworks bonus tracks I've only listened to twice. I'm also itching to give the Cartel stuff another crack. All part of the process of re-ripping the CD collection to FLAC. Nothing is ordered so I take it as I find it in a crowded bookshelf two deep with CDs...

I haven't listened to much Dougans & Cobain for quite a while. Might have to get around to that once the TD marathon is over. Just starting Lily On the Beach... in about half an hour this is going to start getting difficult.

Melrose appears to have been on for the past four hours and I'm lagging. Going to need beer and/or coffee to get through the remainder.

Oh God this album is horrible.

Hmm, can't think of the bit you're thinking of. Lovely album though!

Bloody hell, after Melrose, Rockoon seems like a minor masterpiece. I will probably think differently by the time I reach the end.

Near the end of Turn of the Tides. Beer not helping. Pete, if I suffer death by shitty synth brass, please give mod rights to Pande so he can update the Discography section of the page.
